"Cycling and mountaineering are two of my greatest passions. This expedition was therefore the ultimate experience for me. The kit you use and wear can be the difference between an endurance test and a great journey. K2-UK kindly supplied our Marmot down suits, sleeping bags along with gloves, hats, mid layer and gortex. Every single item performed in the harshest conditions. I can't say enough about the quality of material, design and stitch work. You realise how important this is when you are in extreme environments. It means you can enjoy the adventure. Thanks for top kit. I will always recommend it" Pauline departed from the Dead Sea in Jordan with 4 other cyclists on the 21st of December 2005. The journey took them over 8’000km through Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, Nepal, China and finally Tibet, to the Base Camp at Everest, where she was met in March by her husband Phil Sanderson.
In Pauline’s diary entry written back at base camp, she reflected that the Summit day was long, hard and very scary with several hours of negotiating steep steps, rock climbing, precarious snow ledges and broken ground. It took them nine hours to reach the summit from their highest camp, and a further six hours to descend to Camp 2. The weather had deteriorated and so the couple were somewhat relieved to be at the relative safety of 7500m.
By the next morning, the wind and snow had not relented and the food they had stashed was now gone. It required a huge effort for them to get down to the North Col where they could refuel and relax. Phil and Pauline then returned to ABC the following day to reflect on their achievement.
