Focused more on exams, and a well earned holiday rather than climbing, Katey Whittaker never imagined she would emerge from the weekend as British Bouldering Champion.
![]() Katy competing abroad In Katy's own words; "It was an amazing competition with some great problems and I was fully psyched, there was also a big turn out from the crowd that gave loads of support." Not that Katy could hear them since she was 'in the zone' , focused on the problems. "I went to the competition thinking, that if I make finals then I will be happy, anything above 8th position would be a bonus." Perhaps it was this 'no pressure' attittude that prevented nerves getting the best of her? Katy qualified for the finals in joint 3rd, an achievement in itself, but it was in the final that Katy really stood out, completing 3 out of 5 problems, two of which were onsights. Katy also onsighted all bonus problems she attempted. Her nearest rivals only managed 1 problem each so 2nd and 3rd place came down to attempts made and results from bonus problems. leaving Katy to take the top spot.
